Google Apps For Government Introduced

Google’s products and services may soon become much more prominent in government offices throughout America.  A new edition of Google Apps called Google Apps for Government has been introduced, and it’s been specially tailored to meet certain regulations.

A post on the Official Google Blog explained, “Google Apps is the first suite of cloud computing messaging and collaboration applications to receive Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) certification and accreditation from the U.S. General Services Administration.”

Later, the post added, “Google Apps for Government will continue to evolve to meet unique government requirements.  Google Apps for Government stores Gmail and Calendar data in a segregated system located in the continental United States, exclusively for our government customers.  Other applications will follow in the near future.”

Local, state, and federal agencies should all be able to get onboard as a result.

Granted, it may be a while before many organizations move ahead.  Big decisions can’t be rushed.  But Google Apps for Government is supposed to offer significant cost savings compared to traditional messaging and storage solutions, and that fact should attract a lot of attention given the state of the economy.

Also, the City of Los Angeles and City of Orlando have been acting as test cases of sorts, and the rollout of Google Apps has been going rather well in both those locations.
