FTC Cans X-Rated Spam

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) busted a move on a few porn traders passing unmarked spams. Tag-teaming with Microsoft, the FTC levied fines and civil penalties against seven companies. Four had been settled but three were still pending.

The law being used in these cases says spam containing sexually explicit material must be labeled as such somewhere in the subject line. The FTC also said that the companies didn't provide an opt-out of the emails or a postal address.

The four companies who've settled include BangBros.com for $650,000; MD Media of Michigan for $238,743; Pure Marketing Solutions based out of Nevada and Internet Matrix Technology in Louisiana were together in a case and are coughing up $50,000 and APC Entertainment of Florida for $220,000.

The other companies involved are TJ Web Productions in Nevada, Cyberheat in Arizona and Impulse Media in Washington. These companies are still negotiating with the FTC.

This is just one more notch for cyber security to deal with and while many find the spam offensive, it reiterates the need for swift and violent ends to unwanted spam. This remains a difficult problem to deal with because even though many people don't want themselves or their children exposed to this type of material, in the open forum that is the Internet, sometimes it can be extraordinarily to avoid it.
